PROGRAM NOTES by the composer

Rodolphus Agricola said "ut doceat, ut moveat, ut delectet": 'make it teach, move the heart, and please'. That is what I seek to do with my songs.

This lullabye teaches you the names of the planets in our Solar System (in order, from the closest to the sun to the farthest). It also expresses, in words and music, a parent's deep love for his or her child; cherishing the moments while they are close together, while poignantly looking ahead to the future when they may be far apart.

May it touch your heart and the hearts of those with whom you share it.

Stephanie Bennett 1997

As I tuck you in, I gaze at the sky

growing dark, now the day is complete.

And the wind and I will sing lullabye;

something gentle and lovely and sweet.

I'll turn out the light and sing you to sleep

with a song of the planets and stars.

And I pray your rest is peaceful and deep

as you dream of the wonders afar.

Mercury, Venus, our Earth, and Mars;

Jupiter, Saturn with rings;

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto,

'round our bright sun whirling.

I have watched as people walked on the moon;

you may grow up to travel to Mars.

Then, from far away, remember the tune

that I sang of the planets and stars.

Mercury, Venus, our Earth, and Mars;

Jupiter, Saturn with rings;

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto,

'round our bright sun whirling.

I do not know what your future will bring;

we will see as the years hurry by.

But right here and now, I'll whisper one thing

that I know is true:

that my love for you

is as vast as the infinite sky.
